VE3FYN’s POTA Adventures

POTA, or Parks on the Air, is an ongoing international activity involving operating portable from parks and conservation areas. If you’re not familiar with it, check-out parksontheair.com or pota.app.

There are several parks and conservation areas near me that have yet to be activated. This summer I plan on rectifying that situation. Get ready for some rare POTA DX!

Side Lake Conservation Reserve CA-1624

On 4 May 2026, I plan on activating #CA-1624, the Side Lake Conservation Reserve. This remote reserve is accessed via a seldom-used logging road off a secondary highway that connects Atikokan and Ignace Ontario.

The reserve’s natural feature is a large fen, or bog. Honestly, that’s it.

I will be accessing it via motorcycle. I ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, and will be loading it up with my trusty Icom 703+. I’ll post photos of the bike before I leave, once it is packed.

I plan on operating SSB at first. As I’ll be operating QRP (10 watts), I’ll be calling CQ on or around 7.285 MHz and 14.285 MHz. If SSB is not successful, or if time permits, I’ll switch to FT8.
